According to the World Travel Awards, Penina Hotel & Golf Resort is Portugal’s leading golf resort. In addition to this, Penina is rated 34th in ‘Golf World’s Magazine’ Top 100 golf resorts in continental Europe. Needless to say, it is an exceptional resort. Offering 3 championship golf courses, it will provide a challenge to golfers of all skill levels. The Sir Henry Cotton Championship course is the premiere course on the property. It was the first 18-hole course opened in the Algarve, so it is the true home of Algarvean golf. A very accommodating resort, the Academy Course is a 9-hole par 3 course that is perfect for playing with the children. As the maintenance on this course stays as sharp as the championship courses, it is a thrill for the skilled adults as well as the beginning youths.
Boavista represents the best resort for housing in the Algarve. It offers a variety of accommodations for groups of all sizes. From townhouses for rent for big groups to romantic villas for the couple looking for a getaway, Boavista has it all; not to mention the golf course with its oceanic views to the southwest and the Monchique mountains to the north. After your round is over, take it easy with dinner on the terrace overlooking the 18th green, as well as the Bay of Lagos in the background. From stunning views to the beautifully manicured championship golf course, Boavista can provide everything you’re looking for in your next golf getaway.
The Santo Antonio Golf & Spa is a beautiful resort; however, when compared to the likes of other possible destinations in the Algarve, it doesn’t live up to its potential. Quinta da Floresta is a great golf course and one you should look into playing while staying at another resort in the area. Santo Antonio is merely a cheaper alternative to the 5-star resorts in this area.
Onyria Palmares has the potential to be the most sought after resort in the Algarve, it’s just not completely finished yet. The hotel is set be completed in December of 2016, requiring the guests to find accommodations off-site to stay in. However, once the Beach House hotel is complete, this resort will move to the front of the line as far as vacation destinations are concerned. The golf course opened for play in 2011 and has been raved about ever since. Designed by Robert Trent Jones II, the course has many contours and undulations to fit the land and is placed expertly along the Bay of Lagos. It offers 27 holes that can be played in any sequence making it a unique experience to the golfers. If planning to travel in 2017 or later, Onyria Palamares is a must visit. Until then, there are other resorts in the area that can provide a higher quality experience.
